Awards

JuniorSurf Coach Award
The JuniorSurf Coach award is designed to provide an introduction to coaching for people with little or no experience who wish to become involved in JuniorSurf activities. The JuniorSurf Coach award is closely aligned to the Coaching New Zealand (CNZ) programme. The course consists of two parts, theory and practical: the theory being the CNZ ‘Getting Started’ course and the practical based on surf specific activities.
For further information please talk to your JuniorSurf Coordinator.

SurfCoach Awards
The SLSNZ coach accreditation programme is linked to CNZ courses. These courses are run in conjunction with local Sports Trusts. The SurfCoach programme has four levels: JuniorSurf and Levels 1, 2 and 3. To complete the award candidates must gain the theory component run by CNZ as well as a practical component run by SLSNZ.

SurfOfficials Awards
The SLSNZ SurfOfficials programme consists of three levels. Level 1 is designed to provide an introduction to officiating at JuniorSurf and district level.
Level 2 and 3 are advanced awards for those Officials wishing to gain a
higher level of expertise and go on to become National and International officials.

Lifeguard Awards
To be a qualified Lifeguard you must be 14 years or older and pass your NZ Surf Lifeguard Award exam. The exam comprises:

  • 400m pool swim in under 9 minutes
  • Run-Swim-Run in the surf
  • Resuscitation Test
  • Theory Questions
  • Practical surf knowledge test.

This award must be current. This means an annual refresher test must be achieved to ensure that Lifeguard’s fitness and knowledge is up to the required standard. Members who hold a current Surf Lifeguard Award can be included in their Club’s patrol roster and also sit other Lifeguard awards to
increase their skills:

  • BP IRB Crew Award
  • BP IRB Drivers Award
  • First Aid Awards
  • Senior Lifeguard Award
  • Lifeguard Examiner
  • Lifeguard Instructor

Junior Awards and the Mandatory Safety Requirement
200 metre ‘Safety Award’

Instructors must ensure that all children using the paddle boards/skis have completed the requirements for their safety award.

This is a mandatory safety requirement.
Safety Award for the JuniorSurf Programme
Ocean/Pool
Candidates must swim 200 metres (using any stroke competently) in either ocean or pool.

Following the 200m swim candidates will be expected to tread water for one minute. This one minute of treading water is included within the total time allocation. So the pool swim is 8 minutes total with swim to be completed within 7 minutes and the ocean swim is 10 minutes with swim to be completed within 9 minutes.

It is expected that candidates demonstrate they are confident in the ocean and are capable of returning to shore if they are separated from their equipment.

Examiner is an appointed Club Officer.
Time allocation: 8 minutes pool, 10 minutes sea is a realistic time limit for the above test which involves survival skills (treading water) and fitness (200 metre swim).

Please note: the above requirements will need to be re-tested on a yearly basis.
