Knots

There are two knots that are used in general Lifeguarding activities. Surf Lifeguards should be capable of tying each of the knots listed below and also be able to apply it in the appropriate situation.

Reef Knot
Should only be used to tie the ends of two lines or cords of equal size together, both ends of which are under tension. It can be used in first aid, the tying of bandages, splints etc.

Bowline
This knot is designed to form a loop near the end of a piece of rope and can be used where a foot or handhold is needed at the end of a line. This is an indispensable knot in a Lifeguard’s repertoire because it is reliable, quick to tie, never slips and, most importantly, it is easily
untied.
