Signals

 
In all cases a Surf Lifeguard should continue to send the signal until it is clear that the message has been understood by the receiver.

From Land to Sea

The Surf Lifeguard below  is using rescue tubes to signal their message to Lifeguards in the water. You can also use flags or your arms.

Return to Shore
–One rescue tube held above the head.

Proceed further out to sea
–Two rescue tubes held above the head

Proceed in the direction indicated
–One rescue tube held at arm’s length parallel to the ground and pointed in the required direction.

To Attract Attention
between boat and shore

–Two rescue tubes waved to and fro crossing above the head.

 

From Sea to Land

The following signals are used by Surf Lifeguards when at sea on rescue craft eg, BP IRB, rescue board.

 

Assistance Required
–One arm waved to and fro above the head.
OK
–Arm onto top of head
